State Representative Dave Yaccarino (R-87), members of North Haven’s community and student volunteers from Choate Rosemary Hall gathered on Saturday, December 4th to sort through hundreds of donated items that were later delivered to Columbus House in Wallingford to benefit those in need this upcoming winter season.
Rep. Yaccarino delivered brand new donations of jackets and coats, thermals, hats, socks, and countless pairs of gloves to the Columbus House shelter for veterans. All items donated for the drive easily filled 40 very large boxes to the brim.
“This annual winter clothing drive was once again a huge success. Each year we collect hundreds of donations, but this year we collected more items than we ever did in the past. It was amazing to see so many donations coming in from our North Haven community. When I delivered all the donated items to Columbus House it filled the entire back of my pickup truck, which is going to help many people in need,” Rep. Yaccarino said. “This is a season of giving, and what better way to give back than to assist those who served our country and need some help.”
Beginning in October, Rep. Yaccarino organized this winter clothing drive and elicited support from the community and local businesses to collect and process donations.
Rep. Yaccarino would like to thank everyone who donated, Senator Cicarella and First Selectmen Mike Freda for helping, and to the following businesses and town agencies for their continued community support and for serving as collection points for the clothing: Arnold’s Jewelers, The American Legion Post 76, Love, Lera Bakery, and Yaccarino Automotive.
The mission of Columbus House is to serve people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless by providing shelter, housing, and by fostering personal growth and independence.
